Boring Data

Retail intelligence system

Boring Data reads what actually sells — store by store, week by week — and turns it into how each store should be supplied. It runs on buyer point-of-sale data.

Origin

Floral is a small corner of a grocery store, and it tends to be treated that way — under-resourced, read as decoration, given little of the analysis the rest of the store takes for granted. A buyer running it rarely has much to work with.

Boring Data was built to close that gap. It started with one buyer and one real allocation problem — not a product looking for a use, but a use that needed a tool. It was in use before it was ever offered to anyone.

SAR™ — Sales Above Replacement

Most reads start and stop at sell-through: what came in, what went out. It is the number everyone trusts, and it is the number that lies most often. A store can move nearly everything it receives and still be the worst account on the shelf — if it moved that product by giving the margin away.

So no store is judged on one number, or one week.

In baseball, a player is not measured by a single game. He is measured against what an ordinary, replaceable player would have done in the same spot, over a full season. That difference is the whole point — it is called Wins Above Replacement. SAR™ applies the same idea to a store: it scores each door against a replacement-level store, read over a sustained window, not a single week.

And it does not score on sell-through. It scores on margin, with waste priced in — every unsold unit counted as the cost it actually is. A store cannot buy a good grade by discounting, because the discount shows up in the score. Every door resolves to one comparable number, and a grade:

One scale. Every store, every category, read the same way.

The scoring model is ours. What it produces is shown here. How it is tuned is not.

A cornerstone door. Highest sell-through in its group, lowest waste. Moves product about as fast as it can be shipped. Allocate aggressively, and protect the shelf.

Two doors flip. #002 posts one of the best sell-through numbers in the group — and on margin it is bleeding, because the units are moving on discount. The call reverses: ship becomes hold. #005 looks weak on sell-through and is quietly earning, so it stays supplied. Neither call is visible on sell-through alone.

Review

A number that looks wrong is flagged, not fed into the next order. A store discounting its way to a high sell-through gets held — its weekly cycle paused until the read is clean again — rather than rewarded with more product. A SKU losing thirty to forty percent to shrink across stores gets surfaced, so the buyer can send operations to look.

Every one of these is a recommendation, never a directive. The buyer owns the call. Boring Data makes sure the call is made on what is actually happening.

Principle

The buyer leads. Boring Deco informs. The measure of the work is not the size of the order — it is whether the buyer's category is better off, which sometimes means recommending less, not more.

That restraint sits next to full capability, not in place of it. Boring Deco supplies at whatever volume the relationship calls for, and recommends a lighter hand when a lighter hand is right. A new buyer is treated as a guest: read carefully, advised plainly, never talked over.

Coverage

Boring Data runs across a footprint of more than a thousand stores, with per-store data on the categories Boring Deco manages. Where the full category is provided, the read covers the shelf around our own products, not only our own.

No partner is named here. No figures appear on this page. The relationships are private, and they stay that way.

Access

SAR runs on the categories Boring Deco manages, across the stores it supplies. The read, the grades, the allocation — delivered as part of the work.
